History of RM-S Juniors

Prior to 1948, there was no 'Junior Section' at Mid-Surrey.  There were junior golfers, but they enjoyed few separate facilities and their organisation was sporadic, relying on members with time to spare to help.

This all changed in 1948 with the arrival of a formidable, enterprising lady member, Elizabeth Scott who founded a proper Junior section at the club.  She was fearless in advocating and enforcing good behaviour.  The development of the section spread rapidly, as did it's reputation.

The club approved of Mrs. Scott's approach and soon withdrew the rule which had restricted junior membership only to those children of members.  The Section has remained 'open' to this day.

Mrs Scott introduced more than a dozen trophies which are still competed for today at various times of the year and for a wide variety of different competitive formats

Mrs. Scott's 'reign' lasted for many years, indeed well into the '80s, and she was in charge when several of our juniors made their mark on the game.  John Davies and Warren Humphreys,  Mid-Surrey men, met in the final of the 1971 English Amateur, both going on to achieve Walker Cup honours.  Debbie Dowling established herself in the professional game, Robert Lee was a European Tour winner and Philip Talbot followed in his father's footsteps by becoming the head professional at Mid-Surrey after a stint playing on the European Tour.

After Mrs. Scott responsibility for the juniors fell to Peter Taylor and thence to David Featherbe, who remained involved until he died in 2008.  More recent illustrious juniors include Chris Rodgers, who played several times for England and then as a professional, he won the Pakistan Open in 2006 (the trophy resides in the cabinet  outside the John Haslam room) and Mark Booker and Rupert Rea who have also been regular winners of the Antlers in recent years.

The latest member to show a heavy commitment to the Junior section is the current Junior Organiser, Drew Livesey, himself a very fine golfer in his day (winning amongst other events the Scottish Universities Championship and the Antlers).
