Can I come down to the Club during the week after school? Absolutely! After the clocks change there are a number of Junior members that can regularly be seen either playing a few holes or taking advantage of the practice facilities.
Can I play on either course? As a junior member, you will only be able to play on the Inner Course until you attain a CONGU handicap or after the Junior Organiser recommends that you play in the competitions that take place on the Outer Course? Refer Access to golf courses section
Can I wear my golf shoes in the clubhouse? You can sit inside the junior room to put on your golf shoes and your shoes can be left in the shoe racks whilst you are out on the course but golf shoes should not be worn in the clubhouse. Whilst some juniors do leave their shoes in the racks in the junior room, this is not recommended and we would prefer it if you took your shoes home after playing. Like the vast majority of golf clubs, Royal Mid-Surrey operates a strict dress code. Details of the Junior Sections dress code can be found on The junior section's dress code can be seen by clicking here.
How do I get a handicap? Full details are given in the Essential information section. You will be given an initial handicap by the Junior Organiser. This will be a 'Club Handicap'. As you progress and play in competitions, your handicap will be brought down. When you have cards from at least 3 competitions showing that you have played to a handicap of 28 or less for boys (and 36 or less for girls), the Junior Organiser will advise you that your handicap has now been designated an offiicial CONGU handicap.
How do I get my handicap reduced? The principal way to get your handicap reduced is by playing in Junior competitions (more details below)
Can I play in Junior competitions and how do I find out about them? We actively encourage Junior members to play in as many Junior competitions as possible. Junior competitions are arranged for each school vacation and always happen on weekdays. Details of holiday activities (competitions, matches etc are emailed to each junior member to the email address on the Club's database). In order to play in a competition, you will need to be able to complete properly a scorecard. Refer Essential information section for guidance.
Can I win junior competitions? Assuming you meet the competition criteria, you will be able to win any competition you play in. There are essentially three types of competitions:
- Those played off scratch such as the Junior Spring Meeting (ie Prize to the lowest score irrespective of handicap) The winners of these competitions are invariably the better junior golfers and besides getting a cup, their names are recorded on the honours boards in the junior room.
- Those which can only be won by a junior with a CONGU Handicap. These competitions are scored on the basis of the scores achieved net of handicap. The winner of these competitions will nearly always receive a trophy at the annual prizegiving (each October) which they will retain for the year.
- Those which can be won by a junior with a CONGU or a Club Handicap. An example of such a competition is a Junior Medal or a Junior Stableford.
Details of each of the Junior competitions are given in the Principal Junior Trophies section accessible only after you have logged on via members log-in.
Can I play in Senior competitions? The established juniors, with a CONGU handicap, (& from about the age of 13) are also encouraged to play in the adult competitions (mostly at weekends), but when playing in such competitions it is a club rule that they play with at least one adult member. Juniors do not pay an entry fee when they play in adult competitions and therefore cannot win any monetary prizes, but they do get to retain for 12 months any cups won. Full details of adult competitions are given in the club diary.
How do I get a locker for my clubs? The junior section is allocate 6 lockers. One is allocated to the Junior Captain and the other 5 are offered (2 per locker) to those juniors who played in the most competitions in the preceding year. There is a small annual charge payable for lockers. In summary, the lockers are allocated on the basis of competition participation.
Now I am a junior member, do I need to have golf lessons? Almost invariable the answer is "yes". It is recommended that juniors wanting to progress their golf game should have at least one lesson a month. If you are in any doubt, please feel free to discuss with either the Junior Organiser or one of the Club's Professionals.
Can I play with one of my friends (or my dad) who is not a member? "Yes", however the appropriate Green Fee is payable. The green fee payable by a junior guest of a Junior Member is £5. Guest fees payable for adult guests of a junior member are set out in the green fee section of the website accessible only after you have logged on via members log-in.
How much is a bucket of Practice balls? In order to encourage the Junior Members to practice down on the range, they are allowed to purchase a 70 ball token for the special price of only £1. Tokens for the ball machine are obtained from the Pro Shop.
I have been given a plastic green card, whatdoes it do? The card is your membership card. Please look after it at all times and do not leave it lying about in the junior room. You will need to swipe it to gain access to the clubhouse, including to the junior room. You will also need to use it to make food purchases. You, or your parents, will need to put some money on the card (minimum £10) by handing the card and the cash to one of the bar staff. On the bottom right hand corner of the card is your unique membership number.
How can I get access to the RMS Junior Members area of the website? The first step is to register via the web site. Follow this link. You will be asked to provide some details, including an email address, and then your details will be verified before you will be advised that your access rights have been granted.
