Admission Procedures

Any junior boy or girl expressing an interest in being a junior member should write to the club (contact: Assistant Secretary) requesting that they be considered for junior membership.

Stage 1 - The Assessment

The boy or girl will then be invited to attend the club (usually on a Sunday afternoon) for an assessment by a member of the professional staff.

Following the assessment, a decision will be reached by the professional conducting the assessment, in consultation with the Junior Organiser, as to whether the prospective junior is sufficiently skilled at this stage to be invited to attend on Sunday afternoons as a prospective member. If they are of the requisite standard, then they proceed to Stage 2.

The only circumstances where this initial assessment stage can be ‘jumped' is where the junior's golf game is known to one of the club's professionals or the Junior Organiser and they recommend to the Assistant Secretary that the junior can proceed straight to Stage 2.

Young boys or girls not attaining the necessary standard will be sent a letter suggesting the steps that need to be taken to improve their game prior to re-application.

Stage 2 - The initial paperwork

For those boys or girls doing well in the assessment, so as to validate the insurance and comply with child protection requirements, there is one further administrative stage that has to be completed before they are invited to the club on Sunday afternoons and granted Prospective Member status. The family will be required to:
· complete the necessary parental consent form,
· provide an email address, and
· pay a sum of £25.

Stage 3 - The period of Prospective Membership

When the Club has received the consent form, email address, and the £25, the Prospective Junior will be sent an invitation letter to come along on Sunday afternoons (3pm in the Summer (BST) or 1pm in winter) and play as a prospective junior member. He or she will be also given a golf bag tag with a date on it (expiry date of their prospective period). The key message at this stage is that: if he or she shows the necessary commitment, behaviour and ability over the next 6 months then, providing space is available, they could expect to progress to Junior Member. However, the passage of time alone will not lead to progression to junior membership.

It is important that in this period of prospective membership the Prospective Members complete scorecards as often as possible so that when they come up for junior membership the club has sufficient number of cards to assign an appropriate handicap.

Stage 4 - Progressing to Junior Membership

It is the decision of the Junior Organisers as to when the procedure to graduate from ‘Prospective Junior Membership' to ‘Junior Membership' is initiated. Ordinarily, it would be towards the end of the period of prospective membership. However if the three criteria of commitment, ability and behaviour are not met, the prospective junior member will not progress to Junior Membership.

Only in exceptional circumstances would the period of prospective membership be extended, however the start of the six month period may be delayed (particularly if no space is available)

Stage 5 - The Interview

For those prospective Junior members who demonstrate the necessary commitment and competence and have completed a number of scorecards, the Junior Organiser will arrange a Proposer and a Seconder who will be full members of the club. Paperwork is then completed by the Proposer and Seconder.

When the paperwork is all in order, the junior will be sent a letter by the Assistant Secretary of the Club, inviting him or her to attend for an interview.

The interviews are arranged by The Office and if the proposed time is not convenient, there may be a little flexibility, however the interviews are ordinarily conducted only four times a year by members of the Junior Management Committee and if the suggested dates cannot be met, it may result in a delay. The dress code for interview is ‘smart'.

In addition to general questions about their golf experience, etc a junior is likely to be asked questions on golf etiquette, including etiquette particular to Royal Mid Surrey. Relevant information is to be found on this website .

Whilst the interview is being conducted, the accompanying parents will be briefed on aspects of the Junior Section, on the privileges available to their son/daughter from junior membership, and on the club's expectations of parents.

Following the interview the junior will be shown around the club house and will be given a copy of the rules applicable to a junior member by the Junior Captain or one of the older members of the Junior Section.

Upon payment of the necessary subscription, the boy or girl will receive their bag tag and swipe cards and become members of the Junior Section.
